Match Reports

13th June; Missing several players we expected a tough encounter in the return fixture and to make matters worse Mohammed did not arrive, so we took to the field with 10 men after loosing the toss. Sam Jennings opened the bowling in place of Simmo who decided to watch Notts at Trent Bridge. Sam had immediate success, bowling Toone for 0, just the start we wanted. Tom Holmes opened from the other end and was hit for 6 off his third ball , his opening 5 overs went for 22. Jennings continued to bowl tightly and was rewarded with having the other opener caught behind by Fox. His opening spell of 7 overs produced 2-18. Campbell and Mark Towle took over, Campbell having Sadjeed caught by the Captain DR at deep mid off. Towle was the more expensive of the two but both tried to contain the home batsmen on a wicket with a little variable bounce, both chipped away by taking wickets and it was only Ibrahim with 58 who held the batting together. He should have been out much sooner, Towle dropping him twice off his own bowling. Campbell finished with 4-35, Towle 2-48. Jennings and Holmes returned to mop up the tail, the latter finishing with 2-30 and Jennings 2-32. It was another good performance restricting the hosts to 160 and the fielding from the youngsters, Adam, Harry and Matt was excellent. After tea, the skies looked rain threatening, would the game finish. With a reorganized batting order, Fox opened with Paul Towle, Fox went first ball caught at widish point, the ground erupted, the noise from their players was deafning, you would have thought they had won the match, Mark joined brother Paul, both batted carefully in the rain which was getting heavier as every ball was being bowled. The bowling was tight and Paul was caught behind for 7. Campbell was next in and hit his first four balls for successive fours, opening bowler Vamplew was not impressed, game on but then the heavy rain came, light became poorer and eventually the Captains agreed to abandon the match, 8 points each, would we have chased the total down, Campbell and Holmes thought so, the latter always talks a good game!!!!!!!! That we will never know.

6th June; On an overcast day with rain threatening, the opposition having been round the Vale taking in the countryside arriving 30 minutes late, Kinoulton won the toss and asked the visitors to bat on what looked to be a perfect batting wicket. Holmes soon struck bowling Chandra for 4, Captain Frith departed soon after caught by Fox off Jennings. The visitors were continually pegged back by some good bowling and fielding by the home side and wickets tumbled continually leaving them with a final score of 141. Campbell was the pick of the bowlers with 4-22, Jennings, Holmes and Mohammed shared the rest of the wickets, the latter claiming two in his first Sunday game at home, one being aided by a good catch in the deep from skipper Dave Richards, all eyes were on him with the home players expecting his legs to give way !!!!! ‘ I am grateful for every catch I take ………’

Rain was in the air, so the covers were rolled out to protect the wicket and it proved the right decision as the rain began to fall steadily, tea was taken pizzas, chips and salad bought by Mark and prepared by Juliet, what a delight for the youngsters, Holmes, Jennings and Towle.

The rain stopped, covers removed and play resumed at about 6.15pm, Fox said we should get the target within 25 overs, so with partner Tom Davies they set about the task and the first 3 overs produced 20 runs before Davies was caught off a leading edge for 5. Paul Towle joined Fox and these two played an array of good shots scoring at ease before Towle was adjudged LBW for 38. The stand was worth 107. Campbell (5) Vennett-Smith (0) Jennings(0) soon followed bowled by Chandra. It was left to Holmes to make the winning runs and see the team home by 5wkts, Fox finished unbeaten on 75 in 23-3 overs, he wasn’t far out !!!!!

We entertained Welby in the last match of the Golding Shield, on a cold and windy afternoon. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat. Tom Holmes soon struck by bowling one of their opening batsmen Yeovis for 0. Simmo along with Holmes bowled tightly and runs were hard to come by. Campbell came into the attack and soon had Meadows LBW for 24, he then had Whatton caught by Holmes at mid wicket for 9. Adam France replaced Mark Towle at the Hickling end and after Campbell finished his spell 2-17, Mark Towle switched ends. After 23 overs the game was evenly balanced but what happened next changed the match and certainly rewrote the club record books and may be more within the game of cricket. France had Stuart Whatton caught by Campbell for a very good 42 and he then bowled Spence and David Whatton in successive balls to claim his first ever hatrick. Needing to repair the damage Gilbert found a partner in Curran and these two took the score 139 before Curran was LBW. to Towle for 14, he then bowled Orrey and McCartney in successive balls to claim his first ever hatrick. The innings closed on 139. The search is on to find when this feat last happened. Towle 4-29, France 3-44 and Holmes 1-8 were the pick of the bowlers, another good team performance.

Steve Fox and Tom Davies began the reply but the latter playing his first Sunday match of the season, holed out to the long on boundary for just 2. Wilo joined Fox and these two took the score into the forties before Fox was brilliantly caught by Curran for 34. Campbell went the same way for a quick fire 19, Vennett- Smith (3) and Towle (11)  soon followed but throughout, Wiles held the innings together 43 not out  and it was left to Holmes to score the winning run and see the team home by 5wkts. We now await our Quarter Final opponents.

23rd May vs Queniborough; with several regualr players missing, I had to call on the juniors and how well they played their part in helping the team to a great win, well done Issy, Harry ,Matt and Jack. I won the toss and eleceted to bat on a perfect wicket and in gloroius sunshine despite one or 2 of our players wanting to bowl first, silly boys! The Fox opened with Paul Towle, who had volunteered but was soon dismissed ofr 3. Sam Jennings came in at 3 and after hitting two fours was out for 8, meanwhile Fox was continuing to score freely. Shaun Campbell began slwoly and both were under orders to stay at the crease and build a total. This is what they did. Fox soon reached his 50. The afternoon temperature soared and so did the score with both batters scoring freely, punishing any loose ball to the boundary. Fox moved into the 80s and Campbell reached his 50 as the score went past 150. The partnership having added 144 was broken at 185 when Campbell was run out for an excellent 62 ( 7 fours and 2 sixes). tom Holmes came in next and hit 2 boundaries. Fox had moved into the nervous nineties and in the 39th over reached his hundred, an excellent innings (13 fours). The final score was 227 - 4 off 40 overs, the question at tea - was it enough?

The visitors began their reply with the opener, Asif taking 16 runs off Holmes first four balls, but gaining experience with every ball bowled, he bowled him on the final ball of the over. A steady partenrship of 60 between Harrisson and Zaffer took the score to 81 before Simmo bowled the latter. Sam Jennigs nad Shaun Campbell joined the attack and they slowed the visitors batting, both taking wickets at the right time and after 30 overs they were bowled out ofr 142, Sam Jennigs 3-13 and Campbell 3-18. A great win and an excellent team perfomance, well done to the juniors for putting in good fielding perfomrances, not easy for them in the searing heat.

Let's not forget the match winning perfomrance between Fox and Campbell, congratlaltions to the Fox for his splendid batting and getting his first hundred for the club.

2nd May 2010; We visited Barkston for the very first time on a very cold and windy Sunday afternoon, three sweaters donned, David Richards won the toss and asked the hosts to bat. The decision soon paid dividends and at 20-4 the Barkston batsmen were struggling against the tight bowling of Tom Holmes, Shaun Campbell and Mark Towle. The introduction of Wiles and Vennett-Smith both suffering from very cold hands spurred the lower order with some lusty and cross batting, Copley reaching 33 before being bowled by Paul Towle. Brother Mark was chipping away at the other end with his tight bowling  giving him a 4 wicket haul. The last pair were at the crease 109-9 but a dropped catch at 120 allowed the hosts to set a target of 140. Campbell finished with 2-11; Holmes 2-16; and Mark Towle 4-31.

Wiles and Fox began the run chase but the latter was bowled for 4, Mark Towle joined Wiles and these two took the score to 40 before Wiles departed for 19, caught at extra cover. Campbell, Paul Towle, Vennett-Smith and Holmes went in quick succession and at 125 Mark Towle was out for 55 after a good innings.

The innings closed on 129, 11 runs short of the target, what was an awful day to play cricket ended in a disappointing result and the dropped catch was the difference.

16/05/10 vs Barkby

A much weakened team visited Barkby for the very first time in the Golding Shield on a beautiful sunny afternoon. The homeside won the toss and elected to bat on a good track and a fast outfield, according to Wilo it was a “ Road “. Nic Dutton set about opening bowlers Tom Holmes and Will Minchen and after 6 overs he had scored 34 out of a total 47. Holmes deceived Dutton with a slower ball and Will bowled Flowers at the other end. Mark Singlehurst and Sam Jennings came into the attack, the run rate dropped and wickets began to fall. Mark pulled a muscle in his shoulder and had to be replaced by Issy Vinter who was a late call up to the team, she soon claimed her first wicket by having Lakin LBW. Alex Wiles joined the attack from the pavilion end and without taking a wicket bowled 8 tidy overs for 20 runs.Barkby were bowled out for138 in the 40th over with the bowlers sharing the wickets Holmes 2-24, Minchin 2-35, Jennings 2-15 and Issy 2-15

Singlehurst 1-9. Great fielding from 14 year old, Harry Jones who was playing his first game in adult cricket.

Fox and Wiles began the run chase and were soon in their stride, Fox hitting anything short and loose, Wiles was the first to go run out for 10. Will came in next and his first four scoring shots were boundaries, both batsmen were playing shots freely over the fast outfield. Both were out in quick succession with the score in the nineties, Fox for 50 and Will for 28. It was left to Vennett-Smith 17no and Sam Jennings 22no to see the team home by 7 wickets with just under 20 overs to spare.

This is our 3rd win in the Shield and should see us to the Quarter Final stage with one match to play against Welby
